MAK Projects inaugurates the Canadian Wood Villa in Hyderabad

Canadian Wood is a crown agency of the provincial government of British Columbia Canada, formally known as Forestry Innovation Investment. Canadian Wood and MAK Projects revealed the Canadian Wood villa located in a luxurious gated community in Hyderabad, India. The project was a collaboration between the two organizations to build homes using sustainably sourced wood as a building material. It was led by MAK projects while Canadian Wood was responsible for providing technical support, project management inputs, and training. The project started in October of 2021 and finished construction within 12 months.

The Canadian Wood villa was officially inaugurated by the honourable Minister of Home, Prisons, and Fire Services of Telangana and chief guest, Mr. Mohammed Mahmood Ali, and the Guest of Honor the High Commissioner of Canada in India, Mr. H.E. Cameron Mackay. The inauguration was attended by other dignitaries including the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Kazakhstan for the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and Promoter and Managing Director of MAK Projects Pvt. Ltd, H.E. Dr. Nawab Mir Nasir Ali Khan, CEO of Forestry Innovation Investment, Mr. Michael Loseth, and Country Director of Canadian Wood in India, Mr. Pranesh Chhibber. After the inauguration, the technical advisor of Canadian Wood, Mr. Peter Bradfield gave an exclusive guided tour of the Canadian Wood villa to VIP guests.

About the Canadian Wood Villa

The project led by MAK has a large plot area of 15,000 sq. ft. while the built-up area is 6,000 sq. ft. expanding over two levels. It comes with a large living area, pantry, kitchen, four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, games room, gym, outdoor sitting, AV room, and large outdoor dining. The Villa is one of the first projects in India that uses a light wood frame with prefabricated construction technologies and mass timber. This technique reduces the cost and time of the construction process thereby optimizing the building process. Furthermore, the project has almost entirely used certified and sustainably sourced wood species. Additionally, it includes species like spruce-pine-fir, yellow cedar, western hemlock, and western red cedar.

The villa takes advantage of the large number of benefits offered by sustainably sourced wood such as its aesthetic value, performance, and durability along with its environment-friendly nature. In addition, the carbon footprint of the homes has fallen considerably because of the improved thermal performance and the use of wood and off-site fabrication. By using sustainable building materials such as wood for constructing homes, MAK projects have seen a reduction of 481 metric tonnes of carbon footprint in the project. That has the same impact as removing 102 cars from the road for a period of one year.

Furthermore, the design of the house is reminiscent of the Canadian West coast style. It consists of a mixture of natural construction materials such as stone and masonry. Also, it incorporates wood applications such as double-height cathedral ceilings, gently sloping hipped rooflines, broad overhanging eaves, covered outdoor decking, and exposed beams made of natural timber and glulam.

Speaking on the MAK projects and Canadian Wood collaboration, Mr. Pranesh Chhibber, Country Director of Canadian Wood in India, said–

It’s a highly responsible decision on part of MAK to choose certified Canadian Wood species sourced from sustainably managed forests of British Columbia. We expect this collaboration with MAK Projects will spawn many more such eco-friendly projects in the coming months and years across India.”

British Columbia’s Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation, Hon. Ravi Kahlon in his congratulations address said–

Commenting on the collaboration H.E. Dr. Nawab Mir Nasir Ali Khan, Promoter & Managing Director, MAK Projects said–
