Parallel Hotel, Udaipur: Modern luxury meets sustainable design with Canadian Wood species

Parallel Hotel in Udaipur is more than just a luxury destination—it’s a modern architectural gem. Located near the peaceful Fateh Sagar Lake, the hotel features 55 beautifully designed rooms, each inspired by one of five themes: Art Deco, Bollywood, Contemporary, Hollywood, and Industrial. These unique designs create an experience that combines modern style with Udaipur’s rich cultural charm. What truly sets the hotel apart is its use of natural materials, especially Canadian Wood species, to promote sustainability and durability. Another striking feature is its exterior cladding made from Western Red Cedar, which improves the hotel’s modern look and reflects its commitment to eco-friendly design and sustainable species.

Why Canadian wood species?

Udaipur’s intense climate, with its hot summers and varied weather, needed some serious thought when selecting wood for outdoor use. Western Red Cedar emerged as the perfect choice for the hotel’s exterior cladding and soffits. Its lightweight nature and long life along with its natural resistance to decay and termites, makes it ideal for Rajasthan’s challenging conditions.

In addition to its strength and long life, people can use Western Red Cedar for various purposes. It’s smooth texture and natural grain make it easy to colour, offering numerous design possibilities.  Whether in the soft morning light or illuminated at night, the cedar cladding adds warmth and charm, reflecting the hotel’s commitment to modern yet timeless luxury.

One of the striking features of the Parallel Hotel is its extensive use of the sustainable Western Red Cedar across all four sides of the hotel. The hotel’s exterior, clad in this rich, earthy wood, creates a seamless harmony between the structure and its natural surroundings. The subtle hues of the cedar, along with the sleek, modern lines of the building, add beauty to Udaipur’s skyline. This comprehensive use of Western Red Cedar in such a large-scale hospitality project is quite unique in India, showing not only the material’s beauty but also its environmental advantages.

The natural grain of Western Red Cedar and its strength provide a cladding that is not only beautiful to look at but is also sustainable and long-lasting. Moreover, it also helps to create a cladding that gives an inviting and impressive first look to anybody who visits.

The collaboration with Canadian Wood species was important in realising the vision for Parallel Hotel’s design. Iraj Evolution Design Company Pvt Ltd (I.EVO), a prominent leader in contract furniture manufacturing, worked closely with the Canadian Wood team to ensure the right materials were selected and implemented. Canadian Wood’s team provided extensive technical expertise and consultation for the project, ensuring that Western Red Cedar was used to its fullest potential.

The choice of Western Red Cedar aligns with Parallel Hotel’s commitment to responsible and sustainable design. Sustainably managed forests in British Columbia, Canada supplied the wood, adding value to the hotel’s environmental values while also providing a material that would stand the test of time.

As the hospitality industry continues to evolve, the success of projects like Parallel Hotel paves the way for more sustainable, durable, and aesthetically exceptional designs.
