The Indian plumbing and bathroom solutions market is witnessing a transformative phase, with an increasing emphasis on conscious steps towards sustainability, water conservation, and rapidly evolving technology. As a global leader in the Indian plumbing and bathroom solutions market, Geberit continues to strengthen its presence in the country under the leadership of Gorika Shyam, who got promoted to the role of Managing Director of Geberit Plumbing Technology India Pvt. Ltd. on 1st May, 2025. With over 25 years of expertise in this industry, she played a crucial role in the company’s success.
In this edition of Expert Talk with BuildingandInteriors, she talks about the company’s recently introduced sanitaryware segment, the upcoming growth strategies, and challenges.

B&I: As one of the premium players in the Indian plumbing and bathroom solutions market, how do you see this market going forward for Geberit vis-à-vis your competition?
Gorika Shyam: The Indian plumbing and bathroom market is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by rising consumer expectations, increased awareness of water conservation, and rapid urbanisation. Geberit, with its global heritage of innovation and quality, is well-positioned to lead this change. While competition is intensifying, especially in the mid and premium segments, we continue to differentiate ourselves through precision engineering, sustainable solutions, and strong partnerships with architects, developers, and plumbing professionals. Our goal is to not only grow our market share but also elevate the standards of hygiene and functionality in Indian bathrooms.
B&I: Tell us about your distribution network numbers across India. What are your focus products and regions over the next 1 year?
Gorika Shyam: Geberit has built a robust and steadily expanding distribution network across India, with both distribution and direct dealer presence. We are focusing on strengthening our presence in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, in addition to the established metros. Furthermore, we will continue focusing on concealed cisterns, drainage systems, and the newly launched sanitaryware line.
B&I: Sanitaryware is your new introduction in India. What are your objectives with this category?
Gorika Shyam: Our entry into sanitaryware in India completes the value chain for integrated bathroom solutions. The objective is to provide end-users and specifiers with a cohesive design and functionality experience, from behind-the-wall systems to visible bathroom elements. By offering premium, ergonomically designed, and easy-to-maintain sanitaryware, we aim to enhance our brand recall and relevance, especially in the retail segment.
B&I: Would you like to share some thoughts on your ISH launches?
Gorika Shyam: ISH has always been a significant platform for Geberit globally, and this year was no exception. We showcased several future-ready innovations, especially in smart bathroom technology and sustainable water management.
The new Geberit Sigma40 actuator plate, with its sleek widescreen format and ultra-slim 4 mm profile, exemplifies minimalism. It is available in 10 premium surface finishes. Complementing this, the brand launched the new cover plates for Type 40 urinals. In addition, Geberit introduced ergonomically designed, rimless urinals from the Selnova bathroom series that deliver powerful flushing with just half a litre of water. Meanwhile, WCs featuring TurboFlush technology – soon to expand with iCon series models – offer outstanding flushing performance while significantly reducing noise. Together, these innovations reflect the brand’s ongoing commitment to design excellence, water efficiency as well as user comfort.
B&I: How do you see the projects segment over the retail segment?
Gorika Shyam: Both segments are crucial for our growth, but they serve different roles. The project segment gives us scale, early-stage specification opportunities, and brand visibility among developers and consultants. The retail segment, on the other hand, connects us directly with end-users and installers, critical for building trust and repeat business. We see strong momentum in both areas and are investing in dedicated teams and customised strategies to serve each segment effectively.
B&I: Plumbing is usually the most neglected area in a built-up space. How is Geberit looking at this problem?
Gorika Shyam: Plumbing often doesn’t get the attention it deserves, yet it is one of the most critical systems in any building. At Geberit, we are actively working to change this perception through education, training, and industry collaboration. We conduct regular installer training programs, partner with institutions like IPA, and promote standards that ensure long-term performance, hygiene, and sustainability.
