How do heat pumps work? | Everything you need to know

In today’s world energy efficiency and sustainability are very important before adopting any new technology. Racold, a leading name in water heating solutions, offers a range of heat pump water heaters that address these concerns while providing a reliable source of hot water. Heat pumps draw out heat from the surrounding air. This reduces the use of electricity to a greater extent compared to conventional water heaters. Let us look into the workings of Racold commercial heat pumps highlighting their benefits and explaining how they produce hot water in houses and the process behind their smooth functioning.

How Racold heat pump water heaters work in houses?

This is how Racold heat pumps work. The water heater consists of a tank and a compressor with a refrigerant component. The thermal energy from the surrounding air is sucked into the evaporator that is placed on the suction side of the compressor. Here it mixes with the refrigerant fluid that is present in the compressor. This refrigerant is a CFC-free, non-hazardous and eco-friendly fluid. From the evaporator, the refrigerant moves into the compressor where it is compressed under high pressure. This causes friction between the molecules of the refrigerant and changes it into a gas. The compressor now pumps this gas into the condenser’s spiral coil tube that is wound tightly around the tank. As the gas flows through the coil, it comes in indirect contact with the cold water stored in the tank.

The gaseous refrigerant then loses its heat as it transfers it to the cold water and returns to its liquid state. The liquid-state refrigerant moves through the expansion valve where it expands and becomes a low-temperature low-pressure refrigerant. This refrigerant again moves through the evaporator where it sucks thermal energy from the surrounding air. This process is repeated until the water in the tank is heated to the set temperature.

Thus, how heat pumps work could be broken into these 4 stages –

Heat absorption

The heat pump, usually placed outside, pulls in the air from its environment.

Heat transfer

The refrigerant now warmed up, moves to a compressor. The compressor increases its temperature and pressure, and the heated refrigerant flows into a heat exchanger. Here, it transfers the heat to the water in the tank.

Water heating

As the refrigerant releases its heat into the water, the water temperature rises to the desired level. The refrigerant then cools down and returns to the pump to repeat the process.

Hot water storage

The water, now heated, is stored in a tank for use. To make sure there’s always hot water available, Racold heaters often have backup electric heating elements, which are useful during high-demand periods or when the outside air is too cold for the heat pump to function alone. This ensures efficient heat pump working, providing consistent hot water supply regardless of external conditions.

Advantages of Racold heat pump water heaters

  • Energy efficiency: These heaters have an advanced heat pump and heating element mode that uses much less electricity than conventional electric water heaters, leading to sizeable savings on energy bills. By transferring heat from the air instead of generating it directly, they achieve a higher COP, meaning more hot water for every unit of electricity consumed. Racold’s heat pump COP is in the range of 3.8-4.25.
  • Cost savings: Reduced energy consumption translates to lower operating costs, making heat pump water heaters a cost-effective solution in the long run. Long-term energy savings often offset the initial investment in a heat pump water heater.
  • Environmentally friendly: By reducing electricity consumption, these heaters contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a more green approach to water heating.
  • Reliable hot water supply: Racold heat pump water heaters provide a consistent and reliable supply of hot water, even in varying weather conditions. They are designed to extract heat from the air efficiently, ensuring a comfortable and convenient hot water experience.
  • Advanced features: Racold heat pump water heaters have a high-efficiency compressor that enables a faster and an efficient exchange of heat to provide more water while saving a lot on electricity bills. It is also safer and provides superior conduction of heat.
  • Long-lasting performance: Its Titanium enamelled container protects it from corrosion while its magnesium anode protects it from hard water damage, thus providing a long life.

Thus Racold heat pumps are a modern solution to heating water in a better way. With their strong performance and energy-saving features, these are a great choice for anyone looking to reduce their energy bills and make a positive impact on the environment.
