Choosing the right size of the tile is much more than what will fit in your space. Although there are standard tile sizes for certain areas, you can choose from a wide range of tile sizes to match the overall look of your home. When choosing the standard size of tiles, you should take into consideration the following factors:

Choosing a tile relative to the space

The easiest way to choose the right-sized tile is to select a tile relative to the dimensions of your space. Large areas like living rooms or open-floor kitchens will be able to handle large tiles. While medium spaces like bathrooms will look nice with medium tiles. Similarly,  small mosaic tiles will work well in a small area.

Tile sizes for different appearances

Different tile sizes give a different look. So, using a mix of one or two varying sizes and shapes will create a streamlined and sleek look. Consider the following for example:

1. Large square and rectangular tiles: Large tiles can make a room appear larger. These tiles are proportionate to a room and make a small space look bigger. However, you must be careful to not use extra large tiles as they may overwhelm a space.
2. Subway tiles, plank tiles, and small mosaic tiles: Small tiles can add to the depth of the space and make it look more compact. Tiles such as linear, subway, plank, and mosaic tiles are ideal for small spaces like bathrooms, etc. You can also use small tiles to create a detailed border around larger tiles.

Tile size and grout lines

Larger tiles have comparatively fewer grout lines which give a cleaner look. Also, choosing a similar-looking grout colour gives a seamless appearance. Small tiles with more grout lines are a great option for showers as they add more slip resistance and traction.
