Step-by-step bathroom tiling instructions

Step 1 – Get your bathroom ready for tiling

Make sure that the surface you are about to tile is clean. In case you have old tiling on your washroom floor or wall, remove it very carefully. New concrete must be dried up well before you design it with tiles.

Step 2 – Waterproof your bathroom well

Waterproofing is a must before tiling your washroom. Firstly, primer with a paint roller should be applied to the walls and floor of the bathroom. After the primer dries up if you have any holes or gaps in your floor or wall, fill them with silicon. Apply masking tape around the wall and floor to the level you want to make your bathroom waterproof. Now, you can apply the waterproofing agent to the walls and floor. Then, add a waterproofing membrane to cover the cracks in the wall and floor and let it sit for at least 24 hours. The next day, put an extra coat of waterproofing on the walls and floor and leave it for another 24 hours.

Step 3 – Measure the shower dimensions to know how many tiles you need

Measure each area of your bathroom precisely and then determine how many tiles you will need based on the size of the individual tile.

Step 4 – Start laying tiles now

Start laying tiles from the bottom using thin-set mortar. Cut the tiles wherever necessary before laying. You can also make holes in tiles before laying them around the fixtures.

Step 5 – Apply grout and your job is done

Make sure that your tiles have dried up. Fill all the spaces between individual tiles using grout. Meanwhile, keep a sponge in your hand to clean the tiles. The grout will need more than two days to dry properly.

Things to consider while choosing tiles

  • Types of tiles: Choose ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, or glass based on durability and style.
  • Dimensions: Select tile size and shape to impact the room’s visual perception.
  • Budget: Set a clear budget to prevent overspending on materials.
  • Texture: Decide on smooth, textured, or patterned tiles for aesthetics and safety.
  • Tile and grout colour: Grout colour can complement or contrast with the tile.
  • Finish: Pick a finish like matte, glossy, polished, or textured based on style and maintenance preferences.

Tile care 101: essential maintenance and cleaning

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and debris.
  • Mop with a pH-balanced cleaner and warm water.
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners to prevent scratches.
  • Use a soft, damp cloth for spills and stains.
  • Seal grout lines to prevent moisture damage.
  • Wipe up spills promptly to prevent staining.
  • Place mats at entrances to reduce tracked-in dirt.
  • Lift, don’t drag, heavy furniture to prevent tile damage.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s care guidelines for specific tiles.

FAQs

Are big tiles better in a small bathroom?

Yes, large tiles do quite well in small bathrooms. The impression of space grows since fewer grout lines are apparent in the room, clutter doesn’t overwhelm. Light-coloured large tiles can add to the effect brightening even the smallest spacey boxy area.

What is the 3-4-5 rule for laying tile?

The 3 4 5 rule is a way of laying tiles symmetrically using perfect measurements. This rule states that if you measure 3 units along one wall and make a mark, then 4 units along the other wall and make a mark, the distance between the two marks should be 5 units. If the distance between the two marks is greater than 5, the angle is greater than 90°, otherwise, the angle is less than 90°.

Should bathroom floor tile be light or dark?

Dark-coloured floor tiles tend to make the bathroom appear smaller.  Therefore, it is advised to select light floor tiles if you’re using dark wall tiles to prevent the room from looking stuffy. Another advantage of pairing light and dark tiles together is that the horizon created by this contrast will give the impression that the room is more spacious.

What tile pattern makes a bathroom look bigger?

To give the impression of a bigger space, it is best to go for a horizontal floor tile pattern. In addition, this pattern makes the room feel less cramped and makes the space appear larger.

What is the cost of bathroom tiles in India?

Type of tile Price per sq. ft. (Average price range)
Wooden tiles Rs. 40 – 125
Porcelain tiles Rs. 65 – 70
Ceramic tiles Rs. 30 – 65
Marble tiles Rs. 90 – 250
Vinyl tiles Rs. 80 – 160

What is the best direction to lay the tile in a small space?

A narrow room can appear even longer and narrower when tiles are installed conventionally. To counter this effect, consider laying the tiles diagonally. This diagonal arrangement draws the eye towards the room’s corners, creating the illusion of extended space. As a general rule, vertical tile placement is recommended to make the room seem wider and more spacious.

Which tile is best for a bathroom?

Ceramic and vitrified tiles are the most commonly used and preferred bathroom floor tiles because of their superior grip, affordability, versatility low maintenance, and non-porosity. Whereas, glazed and polished ceramic slabs are considered ideal for bathroom walls as they have a protective layer making them resistant to stains and water.

What bathroom flooring tile is not slippery?

Porcelain and ceramic tiles with textured or matte finishes are excellent choices for shower floors, as they provide a firm grip even when wet. You can also opt for natural stone tiles like slate or pebble tiles.

What type of tile is best for hard water?

Porcelain and ceramic tiles are often the best choices for hard water-prone areas because they are non-porous and less likely to absorb water and minerals. Additionally, opting for larger tiles with minimal grout lines can reduce the potential for buildup.

Are bathroom flooring tiles waterproof?

Bathroom tiles themselves are not inherently waterproof, but many of the materials and methods used in bathroom tile installation are designed to create a waterproof barrier.
