New ceiling designs unarguably remain the top choice of every interior designer, architect, and building expert when it comes to the office and home decoration.

The new ceiling designs completely transform the look and feel of the room. In addition to that, they also have amazing functionality and give a different personality to a room, which should ideally be a reflection of the tastes and style of the occupant/ homeowner.

However, choosing the right false ceilings with the right false ceiling material is not as easy as it seems.

As a false ceiling expert, architect, or interior designer, you have to create new ceiling designs with every new client and project. You must have designed many new ceiling designs previously. However, it becomes almost impossible to reuse the same concept in a new project.

Challenges faced by designers while finalizing new ceiling designs

Every new project has its own set of requirements, expectations, and limitations. As a result, you might have to plan new ceiling designs every time.

No matter how fancy and interesting false ceilings seem to be, there comes a point when you cannot think of a new false ceiling idea. Repeating the same designs is not advisable as it will reflect your firm in a bad light.

In addition to this, a more pressing issue is the client’s expectations and preferences.

In many cases, designers or contractors finalize the false ceiling without involving the client. The end result might not appeal to the customer – both in terms of aesthetics and functionality.

Even if a designer tries to involve a client, often clients are not sure of what do they exactly want. One solution is to show some new ceiling designs to clients and make them select one. But then it will compromise the uniqueness of the design which all clients look for. In all such situations, it is likely that the client becomes dissatisfied, further leading to trust issues.

So what is the solution to this problem?

To resolve this issue, Builidngandinteriors.com has designed a checklist named – BnI Hot-button Checklist.

What is the BnI Hot-button Checklist?

The BnI Hot-button Checklist is a convenient and systematic tool developed for designers by buildingandinteriors.com. This guided checklist will help the designers to involve clients and capture their specific tastes and requirements – Hot-buttons.

It also takes care of the issue that clients do not precisely know what they want and hence are unable to clearly communicate it to the designer.

The logical sequence of questions along with examples and representative images will help clients clearly speak out their style, preference, and usage w.r.t new ceiling.

The same requirements are captured by the designer on the checklist – by ticking the right option selected by the client.

The professional, thus, uses this data and comes up with new ceiling designs for the clients

As a result, we can say that this checklist removes the scope of clients’ dissatisfaction to a large extent, as they get extremely personalized new ceiling designs that match their style and tastes.

How to use the checklist to finalize the new ceiling designs?

For the aid of the professional, the checklist includes all the necessary points related to the new ceiling designs’ choice.

Numerous underrated factors must be taken into account while choosing the new ceiling designs. All such factors are mentioned in this checklist. Some of them are:

  • Type of establishment/ room
  • Dimension of the room
  • Occupants of the room
  • Interior designing style of the room
  • Shape of the room
  • Purpose of the room
  • Lighting fittings and fixtures
  • Vibe preferred by the client
  • False ceiling colour, pattern, and surface preference
  • Specific properties required

Once the designer captures the desired preferences of the client, he can analyze this data and suggest the most appropriate solution to the client.

How to analyze captured data (Hot-Buttons), draw conclusions and suggest appropriate new ceiling designs?

Once the checklist is completed, the designer needs to go through all the points and choose the most appropriate new ceiling designs for them.

Let’s go through a few case studies and understand how to analyze captured data and accordingly suggest the most appropriate new ceiling designs to the client.

Case 1: Residence (independent house)

Client preferences:

  1. Area of new ceiling design: living room
  2. Height of the room: 9 feet
  3. Occupants: Children and adults
  4. Interior design style: Natural
  5. Vibe of the space: Peaceful
  6. Surface Preferred: Textured
  7. Room and ceiling shape: Rectangle
  8. Purpose of the room: Leisure and host
  9. Lighting:
    1. Good natural lighting
    2. No ceiling fans
    3. Decorative lighting
  10. Dark colours preferred,  Beige coloured walls
  11. The client prefers false ceiling wallpapers
  12. Floral pattern preference
  13. No other specifications necessary

Solution

The client wants to install new ceiling designs in the living room. Therefore, the false ceiling should look impressive and unique.

The height of the living room is high enough for the false ceilings to get installed without causing any space crunch.

Additionally, the client likes natural and peaceful vibes; therefore, we’d go for something that makes the place look serene.

For a living room, the best decorative lighting option is a majestic chandelier. Functional lights are not a requirement because the room gets good natural light.

The walls are light in color hence one can go for a darker shade for the new false ceiling to present a contrast.

The client has a preference for false ceiling wallpaper. The wallpaper should have a slightly darker colour compared to the wall. But not very dark else it will go against the vibe preferences of the client (natural and peaceful).

Since the client wants a textured look, so a 3D effect in wallpaper would be most suitable. The client does not have any specific requirements w.r.t functionality (like fire resistance etc). Therefore any false ceiling material can be used for new ceiling designs.

But for wallpaper, the smooth surface of PVC will be best-suited. With PVC, it’ll also be easier to remove the wallpaper if/when required.

The client expressed a preference for floral false ceiling designs, which is best to provide a natural and peaceful environment. Hence, the best solution in this case is:

Floral-patterned wallpaper with 3 D effect (darker than walls but not too dark) on PVC false ceiling with a chandelier at the center.

Case 2: Office (4th floor of 20 stories commercial tower)

Client preferences:

  1. Area of new ceiling design: Conference room
  2. Height of the room: 11 feet
  3. Occupants: Adults
  4. Interior design style: Contemporary
  5. Vibe of the space: Powerful
  6. Surface Preferred: Solid
  7. Room and ceiling shape: Rectangle
  8. Purpose of the room: Work
  9. Lighting:
    1. Poor natural lighting
    2. No ceiling fans
    3. Functional lighting
  10. Color preference: Dark colors
  11. Light-coloured walls
  12. The client prefers a matte finish and painted ceiling
  13. Pattern preference: Stripes
  14. Acoustic control, insulation, fire-resistance.

Solution

The client wants a new ceiling design for a conference room in an office. Right off the bat, we can deduce that an office false ceiling needs to be subtly stylish.

The height is enough for a false ceiling. Keeping in mind the contemporary interior style and the powerful vibe of the conference room, the design should be fewer frills, more character.

Rectangular ceiling panels are the best when it comes to rectangular rooms. They visually elongate the length of the room. One solid suspended ceiling panel, parallel to the table, would add symmetry to the room.

Lighting is a serious concern for this room with poor natural lighting. Since it’s a conference room, it is expected that people would like to take notes or read important papers there.

Hence, it’s in the best interest to light up the room with an array of functional lights like LED panels and recessed lights. Make sure that the brightness of these lights is adjustable so that they can be controlled as per the situation, so dimmer is a must/

The client has expressed their preference for dark colors. However, an entirely dark ceiling might constrict the room. Therefore, one can go for a black and white color scheme- black for the panel at the center, and white for the rest of the ceiling.

A striped pattern can be created on the center panel using paint or lights. The required specific features are all present in gypsum false ceilings.

Therefore, after studying the preferences of the client, the following suggestion can be made for their new ceiling design:

Black and white gypsum false ceiling with a suspended panel equipped with LED panels and recessed lights. The light gives the stripe pattern to the new ceiling design.

Case 3: Residence (Flat on 5th floor in a 10-floor building)

Client preferences:

  1. Area of new ceiling design: Bedroom
  2. Height of the room: 11 feet
  3. Occupants: Elderly
  4. Interior design style: Natural
  5. Vibe of the space: Peaceful
  6. Surface Preferred: Solid
  7. Room and ceiling shape: Rectangle
  8. Purpose of the room: Rest with casual book reading
  9. Lighting:
    1. Medium natural lighting
    2. No ceiling fans
    3. Functional lighting
  10. Prefers brown colour, Light-coloured walls
  11. No bright colours
  12. No pattern preference
  13. Specific features: Moisture resistance and acoustic control

Solution

The new ceiling design is for a bedroom for elderly people. The height is enough for a false ceiling (>= 9 feet). The interior design style is natural, hence wood seems to be a good choice.

A peaceful vibe is required and the ceiling surface preference is solid. A solid wooden false ceiling would work. Since any geometric shape would do, choose a square ceiling for the bedroom.

The client likes brown colors, and wood ticks this box as well. Since there is no preference for the finish, it’s the designer’s call. A matte finish would look better on a simple ceiling.

Functional lights are required but the room already has sufficient natural light. Therefore, 4-6 recessed lights can be used above the top of the bed as reading lights or any other requirement.

Wood also fulfills the specific features required by the client.

Therefore, after studying the prerequisites of the client, the designer can come up with the following false ceiling and lighting solution:

Solid wooden square shaped false ceiling with recessed lights

Case 4: Restaurant (Ground and First Floor in a commercial market)

Client preferences:

  1. Area of new ceiling design: Restaurant
  2. Height of the room: 15 feet
  3. Occupants: All adults and children
  4. Interior design style: Natural
  5. Vibe of the space: Enthusiastic
  6. Surface Preferred: Textured
  7. Room and ceiling shape: Rectangle
  8. Purpose of the room: Leisure and hosting
  9. Lighting:
    1. Good natural lighting
    2. Multiple ceiling fans
    3. Decorative lighting
  10. Dark coloured preferred, Light coloured walls
  11. The client prefers all false ceiling colours
  12. Pattern preference: Stripes
  13. Insulation and Acoustical control properties

Solution

Since the client needs new ceiling designs for their restaurant, it cannot be anything dull and distasteful. It should be impressive and unique in order to attract a loyal customer base.

A natural interior design style with an enthusiastic vibe is an interesting combination. A natural design would make for a relaxing atmosphere.

However, at the same time, we need an enthusiastic touch to make the space livelier. Hence, one can play around with the ceiling by choosing a wooden ceiling, but with an unconventional design like suspended blocks.

Also one can add greenery to the ceiling with real or artificial plants. That would enhance the natural style of the place.

The client has a preference for stripes so the wooden blocks can be made of wooden beams. The required special properties are fulfilled by wood too.

As for the lighting, pendant lights would serve the purpose of decorating the space well. Opt for glass ones to add to the natural style, placed at a suitable distance from ceiling fans.

Therefore, after studying the preferences of the client, the designer can come up with the following false ceiling and lighting solution:

Open ceiling with suspended wooden blocks (including plants) and glass pendant lights
