World Nature Conservation Day 2022: Indian building industry honours sustainability

28th July is observed as World Nature Conservation Day, annually. The occasion focuses on creating awareness about the safety, health, and preservation of our environment and natural resources. In the purview of the growing concerns about the effects of human actions on the ecological system, World Nature Conservation Day remains significant. The building, construction, and interior industry play a critical role in conserving the environment. In fact, today, the consumer is as conscious of making sustainable choices as the industry. Therefore, the building material and construction industry has taken major steps toward this path of environmental conservation.

BuildingandInteriors spoke with some of the industry leaders such as Canadian Wood, Stiebel Eltron, Villeroy & Boch, and Ar. Simranjit Singh who have made notable contributions toward environmental conservation and protection. These key stakeholders in the industry have come up with many innovative and sustainable solutions to provide comfort & efficiency to the consumers.

To preserve essential ecological systems, genetic diversity, and conservation of resources, it is important to give up traditional exploitative construction practices. These practices resulted in the heavy destruction of trees for wood and exhaustive mining of resources for cement production, etc.

Therefore, we need newer sustainable construction practices as well as green building alternatives. The use of materials such as bamboo, reclaimed wood, recycled steel, ferrock, terrazzo, etc. offers responsible construction methods. It is, indeed the need of the hour to reduce the ecological impact of new construction significantly. Thus, only through such conscious building and green construction practices, we can achieve a healthier and more sustainable environment.

Stiebel Eltron remains synonymous with renewable energy and sustainability. The brand offers ideal solutions for the utilization of the power generated on-site from renewable sources. Using these solutions, we can increase the consumption of power generated on-site to connect and control the technical components of a building. The Internet Service Gateway (ISG) creates the necessary interfaces to control building services intelligently.

Moreover, the modern ventilation systems contribute significantly to the efficient use of energy in addition to ensuring a healthy indoor climate.  Stiebel Eltron’s ventilation systems with heat recovery retain up to 90% of the other lost energy. Also, heat pumps draw 75% of their heating out from the environment. Stiebel Eltron won “The European Environmental Bureau awards and was rated the top ‘Climate Leader’ in recognition of the brand’s conscious efforts towards the use of climate-friendly renewable energies.

“Wood is incredibly valuable to the world and to our daily life. It is a natural resource with various advantages for the environment and human health. Hence, it remains vital for nature conservation. With forests as the only source of wood, they need to be protected through sustainable forestry practices globally. Sustainable forest management promotes opportunities for present and future generations in terms of the environment, economy, society, and culture while preserving and improving the long-term health of forest ecosystems for the benefit of all living things. In B.C., Canada, sustainable forest management is ensured through a robust system of forest regulations, monitoring, and enforcement. World Nature Conservation Day is important in the context of the expanding worries about how human behaviour affects the ecological system.”

Conclusion

Even while environmental conservation & preservation has received more attention in recent years, there is still a long way to go until effective measures bear fruit. The necessity of protecting the environment has grown more obvious recently. The relentless overuse of resources by humans has caused strange weather patterns, habitat destruction for wildlife, species extinction, biodiversity loss, and climate change, among other issues. Thus, the industry ascertains more rigorous solutions that cater to sustainability and efficiency.

That said, with the introduction of efficient green technologies and construction processes, we can credit ourselves for having a great start. The only way forward should be to work more consciously and cautiously towards environmental protection.
